Ofshore & Maritime Medicals
We undertake 3 types of diving medical at ESTC:
• Commercial and HSE Approved Medical
• Offshore (UKOG) Medical
• Seafarer’s Medical.
These are detailed below including requirements, costs, validity and certification. All medicals are conducted by our HSE approved doctor, Dr Tim Fitzsimons, (M.B., Ch. B.), an experienced Diving Medicine specialist. As well as conducting Offshore and Maritime medicals, Tim has many years of experience treating divers suffering from Decompression Illness at the Wirral Hyperbaric Treatment Facility. As a Hyperbaric Specialist he is also a medical advisor to various commercial diving companies on the management of the sick and injured diver.
Commercial and HSE Approved Medical
The requirements for Commercial Diving are more stringent than for recreational diving. The HSE lists 5 working practices for each area of Commercial Diving:

Archaeology Recreational Instructor e.g. PADI
Each diver requires a thorough medical and subsequent annual medicals. Medical includes checking personal details, previous medical history and log books followed by a thorough examination which includes a full hearing test, a detailed lung test (spirometry), a heart trace (ECG) and a monitored step test assessment. Initial examination may require blood testing (full blood count), completing the HSE questionnaire and confirmation by your G.P.
Successful divers will receive HSE certification and a full copy of the medical. Please bring proof of I.D, qualification cards, previous Dive Medical forms and a pair of trainers (step test).
Commercial and HSE Approved Diving Medical is valid for 1 year. Cost is £180 or £100 for PADI/Recreational Instructors. Workers in the Offshore Sector need medical certification to confirm their fitness for training and working offshore. Divers attending our DMT Courses (Full and Refresher) who need a medical can now undertake one whilst on site at ESTC.
Offhore (UKOG) Medical:
Our Offshore Medical covers basic medical checks, a hearing test, spirometry and visual capacity.
Certification conforms to UKOG (UK Oil & Gas). Offshore Medical (UKOG) is valid for 2 years. Cost is £100.
