Sustainability at Emergency Services Training Centre

At Emergency Services Training Centre, we recognise our responsibility to operate in an environmentally responsible and sustainable manner. Beyond simply meeting legal and regulatory requirements, we are committed to continually reducing our environmental impact and improving sustainability across all areas of our work.

Every member of staff plays an important part in helping us meet these goals, and sustainability is regularly discussed during staff meetings to ensure our commitments are put into practice.

Our Commitments

We aim to:

  • Meet and exceed relevant environmental regulations and standards.
  • Regularly review and improve our environmental performance.
  • Reduce our carbon footprint through efficient energy, transport, and waste management.
  • Increase awareness among staff, students, and patients of how their actions contribute to sustainability.
  • Support the UK Government’s goal of achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
  • Continue developing new ideas and initiatives through regular sustainability discussions and reviews.

Our Achievements and Ongoing Actions

Energy Efficiency

We’ve replaced all fluorescent and sodium lighting across the facility with low-energy LED systems, significantly cutting electricity use and costs. Solar panels are actively being looked at to make use of our large roof space, allowing us to further reduce our reliance on non-renewable energy.

Transport and Travel

We encourage staff to share lifts, walk, cycle, or use public transport wherever possible. Bike racks are available for both staff and visitors. Our investment in large gas storage banks has reduced delivery frequency, cutting emissions from road transport by enabling bulk deliveries and reducing the number of lorries required to deliver to site.

Consumables and Waste Reduction

We minimise waste by using out-of-date stock within our training facility that would otherwise go unused, and by ordering supplies in bulk to reduce packaging and delivery frequency. We are also transitioning to reusable masks and hoods to cut down on single-use plastics, while ensuring that infection control remains closely monitored and a top priority.

Suppliers and Procurement

Where possible, we choose suppliers that share our sustainability values and demonstrate responsible environmental practices. Bulk purchasing and careful supplier selection help reduce waste and transport emissions.

Awareness and Communication

Environmental awareness is promoted throughout the organisation via staff meetings, internal communications, and day-to-day practices. We actively encourage feedback and new ideas from all staff to keep improving how we operate sustainably.

Through these actions and our continued commitment to a Net Zero 2050, we aim to make meaningful progress towards a greener, more sustainable future — supporting both our people and the planet.
